Propane Gas Safety Tips

Check out these tips:

  • Propane is one of the safest gases to use for your home, vehicle, or equipment. However, it does require your respect and some essential safety tips. Check out these general guidelines about using propane gas around your home:
  • Propane gas leaks can smell like rotten eggs.
  • If you smell a gas leak, leave your home immediately. Contact our team and the local fire department. Do not touch any light switches or electrical outlets.
  • Purchase a propane leak detector at your local hardware store.
  • Be aware of the layout of your gas service lines, especially before any renovations or landscaping work.
  • Contact our technicians to check and service your system if you suspect your gas appliance has been damaged by flooding or water.
  • Clean all propane furnaces regularly. Refer to your owner’s manual or get in touch with us for instructions.
  • If your propane range’s flames are not blue, you need to have it serviced. Yellow flames are a sign of a blockage to the air inlets or a burner that needs adjustments.
  • Never use a propane grill or gas range inside your home.

Propane Safety FAQ

What should I do if I smell gas?

Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate appliances, lights, telephones, or cell phones. Any flames or sparks from these sources could trigger an explosion or a fire. Leave the area immediately and get everyone out of the building. Shut off the gas by turning off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it’s safe to do so. Report the leak to your propane retailer, 911, or your local fire department safely from a neighbor’s home. Do not return to the building or area until your propane retailer deems it safe to do so. Get your system checked before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances.

Can I use my BBQ grill to keep my home warm if the power goes out?

No. Never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas.

Can you perform a safety inspection for me?
