Propane Gas Safety and Tips

  • If you smell propane gas outside around your tank you should turn the gas off and call your propane gas company immediately.
  • If you smell gas inside your house or have a rotten egg smell inside check your tank because you maybe running low on propane gas. Call you propane gas company.
  • If your tank gauge does not work, you can determine how much gas is in the tank by running your hand down the side of the tank. Propane gas is colder than the tank itself. Call your Propane Gas Company, when the tank is completely empty replace the deffective gauge.
  • During the warm months if you receive a gas delivery, keep in mind that propane gas is liquid and vapor and expands when warm. Each tank has a pop off valve to release gas pressure.
  • If you believe you have a small gas leak on the regulator or gauge you can check this by taking some dish washing detergent and water, place soapy water on the regulator or gauge, if it bubbles you have a small leak. Notify your propane gas company. They will come out to do a pressure test.

    Pilot Outage:
    1) Turn off gas to appliance that has pilot out
    2) Check to see if any other pilots are out
    3) If leak is evident, turn gas off at the tank
    4) Have a qualified technition return appliance(s) back to operation after safety check is complete

    Inside Gas Leak:
    1) Turn tank off outside
    2) Leave the home/building leaving door open to all ventalation
    3) Using a neighbors telephone or cell phone, call your local gas company

    Outside Gas Leak:
    1) Turn tank off outside
    2) Call gas company immediately

Always call your propane gas company if you think you have a gas leak. Turn the gas off at the tank.
